Cup Double for Canterbury Cup Double for Canterbury

The Canterbury Red Hawks women’s softball team and the Red Sox men’s softball teams have won the Jubilee and Jefferies Cups, respectively, in the South Island Softball Championships. The Red Hawks squad included Kaiapoi Softball players Nerissa Bailey McDowell, Layla Bailey McDowell, and Lauren Sutherland. Over the weekend a small team of North Canterbury athletes competed at Nga Puna Wai. In the Childrens event Farai Musesengwa picked up first placings in the 9 boys 60m and 200m events. Mya Phillips also won her 14 girls Discus. Lily Morrison was 2nd in the 11 girls 100m, and Jake Boyd was 3rd in the 10 boys 1500m race. The Canterbury United Dragons football team picked up an away win over fellow strugglers Hawkes Bay in the ISPS Handa Men’s Premiership. The first half didn’t see any goals in what was shaping to be a close encounter. However early in the second half Ihaia Delaney found the back of the net for the Dragons. Weedons and Sefton joined Leeston Southbridge at the top of the Country cricket leaderboard this weekend. Sefton won by default as Southbrook were again forced to default. Batting first, Weedons heaped on the runs to finish their 45 overs at 274/7. Brad Nightingale opened the innings with a steady 65, with Charlie Robson 61, and Devon Nightingale 45 not out, adding to the impressive total.
