The Canterbury secondary school basketball competitions got underway this week, and there was local rivalry on court between the Whelan Trophy division two girls teams, Rangiora New Life and Kaiapoi High School. It was a tight encounter with Kaiapoi High eventually winning 69-54. The Kaiapoi High School boys team were involved in their own tussle in the Thomson Trophy division two boy’s grade. They finished with a heartbreaking one-point loss, 90-91 with Cathedral College. In division one, the Rangiora girls were defeated by St Andrews College 61-74, and the boys were also defeated by St Andrews College 77-97. Also playing mid-week were the North Canterbury women’s side. The Lynx defeated their Royals opposition 29-17. The men’s division one team had a win in the weekend, 60-53 over the Wolverines Blue. The under 23 men’s team went down 50-60 with University of Canterbury, while the U20’s picked up a good win over Gators 96-65. The women’s u19 team defeated Halswell 63-40. In the youth competitions, the under 16 girls North Canterbury White team were defeated by Checker 54-61, and in the local derby, the Black team got up over the Maroon’s 66-60. The under 17 Rangiora High School team were beaten by CBHS in the A grade competition, while the Kaipaoi High team defeated CBHS in the development grade. In the middle section North Canterbury were defeated by Gators 60-97. The under 15A grade saw Rangiora High defeat Rolleston 75-65. In the development grade, North Canterbury Black lost to Selwyn 48-58. And in the middle grade, Kaiapoi High beat St Thomas Blue 88-38, and North Canterbury White defeated Selwyn Red 65-45.
