28 July Nervy finish for win July 28, 2020 By Pam Fraser Sport The Waimak Premier women’s football team held on to their joint second place in the league, with a 3-2 win over Halswell. They got out to a 3-0 lead, through two goals from Charlotte Roche, and one from Jayda Stewart. Halswell got one back before the halftime break, and then it was a nervy finish as they put a second in the net, but the Waimak girls were able to hold on. The CWC women’s reserve team had a top of the table clash with Cashmere Technical, but the two sides could not be separated, finishing with a 1-1 draw. In the men’s CCL match, Burwood dominated the match, on a heavy pitch at Clare Park. They took a three goal advantage, with Waimak only able to pick up a consolation goal to Floyd Duffy in the dying minutes. The CCL reserves were also defeated by Burwood 2-4. In the Canterbury United development leagues, the 15 boys defeated Christchurch United 3-2, the 14’s lost 1-5, and in another close match, the 13’s ran out winners 4-3, also over Christchurch United. The 18 girls defeated Papanui Redwood 3-1, and the 14 girls had a strong win 5-1 over Coastal Spirit. In the midweek Premier secondary school’s competitions, the Rangiora High School boys team was beaten 0-4 by Christ College, and the girls lost to Christchurch Girls High School 1-4. Related Articles Oxford-Rangiora finish year strongly The Oxford-Rangiora cricket team finished 2020 with a good win over Southbrook in the Country Cricket one day competition. Batting first they put 226/10 on the scoreboard. Calvin Scott surpassed the half century mark opening up with 58. In reply Southbrook lasted 33 overs, but could only manage 84/10. A five-wicket bag from Sam Fleming was the major highlight. Leeston Southbridge retained their spot at the top of the competition after they defeated Weedons. Weedons ... Frosty start gives way to freezing finish Football was the first of the big winter codes to get underway this weekend. The Waimak United competition junior grades kicked off on a beautiful but frosty winters morning, and it was obvious they were all excited to get their seasons started. In the Canterbury United Youth Development Leagues, the Waimak 15th grade had a 0-3 loss to Selwyn. The 14th grade overan their opponents, Halswell, 9-1, and the 13th grade had a 3-0 win ... Three of a kind The Rangiora Hockey club can boast three senior titles for the 2020 season. The division three men won their final 2-1 over Southern. The Platinum division two Rangiora A men’s team finished 3-3 in their final with Avon but were able to win their shoot out. And midweek the Rangiora Hurunui division two women defeated HSOB Burnside to win their final. The Rangiora division one men had the bye this weekend but finish the season ... Top fours all round The CCL men’s league wrapped up, with the Waimak United team going down 4-1 to Burwood. Burwood were dominant throughout the match, but Waimak were not without their chances. They did take one when Alex Kedslie met a corner from Luke Fraser, pounding his header onto the post, and Mitchell Quigley was able to follow in for the goal. Points shared The weekend saw a clash between 2nd placed FC Twenty11 and 3rd placed Waimak United, in the men’s CCL league. Waimak started off the scoring when Lucas Clark finished off a nice attacking play from the home side. The Waimak side were dominant in possession for long periods, but FC were able to equalise. Late in the match, Waimak found another goal, when Danny Loney was played in between the lines, and finished well ...
