The Canterbury Country T20 cricket final was played between Oxford-Rangiora and Sefton on a cool Friday evening, on the 6th of March, at Mainpower Oval.
Recently returned NZ U19 Cricket World Cup representative, Rhys Mariu, showed his batting class, opening for Oxford-Rangiora. He batted through, scoring 101 not out, off 71 balls, including 11 fours. Oxford-Rangiora put a total of 147/5 on the board, from their 20 overs. The best of the bowlers for Sefton was Jeff Jones, taking 2/28 off his 4 overs.
The Oxford-Rangiora defence of their total, couldn’t have got off to a better start, with the umpires giving Sefton opener, Mckenzie Smith out, caught and bowled by Josh Mariu, from the first ball, under contentious circumstances. Some in the crowd felt it was a bump ball, but Smith was forced to walk when the umpire raised the finger. Nigel Granger and Fraser Sheat put up some resistance, top scoring for Sefton, with 24 and 23 respectively. However, Oxford-Rangiora went on to roll Sefton for 92 all out, off 17.4 overs. Mark Murphy was the best of the Oxford-Rangiora bowlers, taking 3/9 from 3.4 overs.
