Rangiora High School Eliminated

A spirited Rangiora High School 1st XV has been eliminated in the semi-finals of the UC Championship. They played Christchurch Boys High School at Straven Road, and initially struggled to get into the match. Christchurch Boys were able to convert a penalty in the first few minutes and then scored a try soon after, which was converted for a 10-0 lead. They scored another midway through the half when a grubber kick deep into the corner was won and dotted down giving them a 15-0 advantage. However late in the half, a solid scrum and pick and go, saw Rangiora High School score under the posts, and Kaleb McCabe was able to convert, reducing the halftime deficit to 15-7.

Rangiora High School came out firing in the second half and were the first to score, with a skip pass out to the winger, Oscar Burney, to fly in unopposed. The score 15-12 to Christchurch Boys. Unfortunately for the North Canterbury lads, Christchurch Boys would score the next two tries and convert for a 29-12 lead. They certainly weren’t short on heart and never gave up, and managed to close the gap, when fullback Tama Nicholls carved his way through the Boys High defence, and passed on to Blake Tull on the wing to score in the corner. Final score 17-29 to Christchurch Boys High who will meet St Andrews College in the final.

There was further disappointment for the North Canterbury contingent in the Canterbury Mitre 10 Cup squad, Josh McKay, Luke Romano, and Fletcher Newell, as they were beaten by Taranaki 22-23, also conceding the Ranfurly Shield.

Grace Brooker had a much better weekend, with her Canterbury team running in 13 tries against Otago in the Farah Palmer Cup, to win 85-10.
