Rangiora New Life through to final

There were two North Canterbury schools in the semifinals of Thompson Trophy Division Two secondary school basketball competition this week. Rangiora New Life School faced Cathedral College and came away with a 98-84 win to take their place in the final. Unfortunately, Kaiapoi High School couldn’t make it an all North Canterbury final, as they were defeated by Rolleston College 99-112.

It was a tough day at the office for the North Canterbury basketball teams in semifinals over the weekend. In the boys under 13 grade the Cheetahs were knocked out by Wharenui 69-81. Both under 15 girls teams were defeated in their semis too. The North Canterbury Maroon team beaten 37-71 by Checkers, and the White team just pipped by Gators 42-44. The under 17 boys Rangiora High School team lost their semi to Cashmere Gold 76-80.

The North Canterbury under 21 women finished off their round robin in third place after going down 68-110 versus Gators.

The Women’s Premiers are directly into the final, after their unbeaten season, and will face Halswell.

Eight players from the North Canterbury and Rangiora High School teams were selected in the Canterbury Basketball First Teams, recognising the top five players in each grade. They were Milan Newton (U13 boys), Grace Tull (U15 girls), Hannah Jagger, Ashlyn Rean (U18 women), Elsie McRobb (U21 women), and Mary Goulding and Esra McGoldrick (Premier women).
