The Rangiora High School 1st XV have made the top four of the UC rugby Championship for secondary schools. This is a fitting result following the hard work the local boys have put into the season. In the final round of the competition they met bottom of the table Lincoln High combined, in what could have been a banana skin match. They needed the win to finish in the top four ahead of nearest rivals, Christs College. Fortunately, they did everything required and more, taking the win 70-7. They now meet top of the competition Christchurch Boys High School in their semifinal. In their match during the season they were beaten 15-20 in a hard-fought match at home. This time they will travel, and the band of supporters will be hoping for a Covid level change, so they can enjoy the match live, too. This week the Rangiora High School girls team went down 29-65 to Forward Foundation in their UC Cup match. Also in action this week were former Rangiora High player, Fletcher Newell, Kaiapoi’s Josh McKay, and Hurunui’s Luke Romano, who all started for Canterbury against North Harbour in the Mitre 10 Cup. Canterbury getting the win 43-29. Oxford’s Grace Brooker was also in action for Canterbury in the women’s Farah Palmer Cup match versus Manawatu. Brooker, vice-captain of the red and blacks, saw her team get up over the Manawatu Cyclones 36-10. The Metro competition final was also played in the weekend, with the Lincoln University side featuring ex-Rangiora High school players George Prain and Lewis Ponini. The students defeated Marist Albion 30-29 in a closely fought final.
