Waimak United played host to hundreds of young footballers last week at the Pride Regional 14th grade and 12th grade tournaments at the Kendall Park. Each grade had 10 teams from across the Canterbury region, along with a visiting Southern United team in the 14th grade competition. Waimak entered two teams in the 12th grade, one being a development 11th grade group, who finished up 6th overall. They began with draws against Coastal and Cashmere Technical, suffered a 0-5 loss to Nomads, before defeating Ferrymead Bays 3-2 to finish 3rd in their pool. In their cross over matches they defeated Selwyn 3-2, but then lost to the Nomads Valkyries 0-3. Allizae Russell was named their team MVP. The Waimak 12th grade Black team began with a draw against the Nomads Valkyries 1-1, but then picked up three good wins, 4-0 over FCTwenty11, 9-0 over Cashmere Tech, and 5-1 over Selwyn, and this put them top of their pool and into the semifinals. The semifinal against Cashmere Technical was a tight affair and they eventually picked up a crucial goal for a 1-0 win. The final was against Nomads who proved to be the better side, winning 3-0. Caitlin Eiffe was the Waimak Black team MVP, and she also picked up the 12th grade Golden Boot award. The Waimak 14th grade team had a tough start to the tournament losing 0-6 to Southern, but bounced back with a 4-1 win over Cashmere Tech Gold. They then suffered two more defeats 0-3 to Nomads, and 1-2 to Selwyn. In their cross over match they came from behind to snatch a draw with SAS and take the game to penalties, but unfortunately it was SAS who held their nerve to win. In their final match they reversed their previous score line with Selwyn winning 2-1 to finish 7th. Shiloh Jenkins was named the team MVP. The final of the 14th grade was between Cashmere Technical and Halswell. At the end of normal time it remained 0-0, and the tournament was decided on penalties, Cashmere Technical the victors. The Waimak 18th grade girls were also competing in their regional tournament at Ilam Fields in Christchurch. They faced Southern first up, losing 0-5, but then defeated Papanui Redwood 3-0. They went down to SAS 1-4, taking them into the pool playoffs for 5th-8th. They picked up wins against Selwyn 1-0, and another against Papanui Redwood 2-0, before losing to a tight match against Nomads 1-2 to finish 6th overall.
