The North Canterbury Premier women’s basketball team continue to lead the grade, following their 78-44 win over Halswell. Mary Goulding top scored with 21 points, and Helen Matthews added 16. The Premier men didn’t fare so well, going down to Gators 84-64. Gators were able to get out to a 10-point advantage by halftime and doubled in the final two quarters. Ethan Rusbatch was again the top scorer for North Canterbury with 23 points, and Nat Connell contributed 15. In the youth grades, the U21 women were defeated by Gators 50-93. The U18 girls match between North Canterbury and Rangiora High School was a much closer affair, with the North Canterbury girls taking the win 61-59. It was even closer in the U15 girls game between North Canterbury maroon and Pioneer. North Canterbury were pipped 46-47. In the other U15 girls game, North Canterbury white defeated Gators 62-59. The North Canterbury u13 boys had a solid weekend, with the Cheetahs defeated Selwyn 72-66, and the Tigers winning by almost the same margin over Pioneer, 72-67. In the battle between the two North Canterbury teams, it was the Pumas who got up over the Lions, 71-63. In the secondary school’s competitions midweek, the Rangiora High School girls maintained their good form in the Whelan Trophy, defeating Papanui 83-37. This keeps them at the top of the table. In division two, Rangiora New Life were beaten by Lincoln High, 37-81, and Kaiapoi High School had the bye. In the Thompson Trophy boy’s competition, Rangiora High School defeated Riccarton High, 98-77. In division two, Rangiora New Life were beaten by Catholic Cathedral College, 95-83. The Kaiapoi High School boys picked up a win over Papanui High 87-65.
